HTC HD2 receives Sense 5 ROM

And so the epic journey continues as the almost legendary HTC HD2 smartphone receives yet another breath of life. Thanks to some ardent souls over at XDA developers, the well-aged smartphone is getting the latest iteration of HTC’s custom Android interface, the HTC Sense 5.

The HTC HD2 began its journey way back in late 2009 as a Windows Mobile phone, back in the days when it was still called Windows Mobile. But through the device’s hackable nature and no small amount of effort on the part of its devoted users, the HD2 slowly made its way up the ranks of Android devices, first getting Android 2.2 Froyo, then 2.3 Gingerbread, and finally receiving CyanogenMod 9 in May last year, which brought Android 4.0 Ice Scream Sandwich and Sense 4.0.

Now thanks to the work done by XDA senior member gilbert32 and a number of acknowledged volunteers, the four-year old smartphone is getting a new lease on life and a facelift to boot. The ROM is currently a work in progress and so not everything is currently functional. Touchscreen, cellular connection and data work so far, but leaves WiFi, Bluetooth, camera, sound and video playback still unusable. You can see the ROM in action in the video below.

There is definitely a bit of sluggishness and, as mentioned, not everything is working yet. But it is already a miracle that something this old, at least in mobile device terms, would still be able to get something this new, and will be even more of a miracle if and when they get everything working again.
