How to display AccuWeather information on the OS 10.2.1 clock

One of the applications that I use on a daily basis, and I’m sure you all do, is the Clock application. Using the multi-alarm feature I set myself reminders or use it as my wake-up call for work in the morning.

One of the new features in OS 10.2.1 is that the Clock app now includes AccuWeather information. This convenient feature lets you know first thing in the morning when you silence your alarm how to dress and whether you need an umbrella when you leave for work.

Minimal Clock app brings simplicity to your homescreen

There is absolutely no shortage of apps on the Google Play Store that will deliver a clock or weather widget. They’re extremely popular, and a new one appears on the daily. Recently I’ve switched my attention to having a minimalistic look and feel on my homescreen. Just a few needed apps and a beautiful analog clock. And Minimal Clock was just what we were looking for.

81d7f7d82b40x263.png Minimal Clock app brings simplicity to your homescreen

This app is new to the Play Store, called Minimal Clock, and is exactly what you’d expect. We don’t have an array of settings, color variations, or different designs, as everything is simple and minimal here. There’s two different options, and only a few select colors to choose from.

Don’t worry though, because they are minimalistic and clean, and look great with nearly every background I’ve tried lately. With simple black and white options as well as a Holo-blue that fits right in with Android Jelly Bean. It comes from a relatively new Indie developer, but the app is completely free and doesn’t have any pesky permissions, so is just a quick way to customize the look and feel of your Android.

If you’re like me and still want a few options, an update will be addressing that as well. The developer states the next update for Minimal Clock will bring a custom color wheel so you can choose whatever color you’d like, then he’ll also be adding support for Android 4.2 lockscreen widgets. I’d really like this clean Holo-Blue for my lockscreen, and I’ll be happy.

The developer also states some additional options will be coming soon, although we’re not exactly sure what or when. So far the app is clean, simple, and beautiful. Our only complaint would be the UI for configuring your widget. It could use some work to be easier to understand and more visible. That aside, give this free new app a try and let us know what you think. Here’s our favorites below.

This one will have you jumping out of bed in the mornings – My Alarm Clock for BlackBerry 10

I’m pretty sure that in this day and age most of us use our smartphones as an alarm clock in the mornings. Of course, we have a native option on BlackBerry 10 but it just doesn’t do it for me. Sure, we know we will get the multiple alarm option in BlackBerry 10.2 but relying on the native alarm doesn’t get me up. Luckily I discovered My Alarm Clock in BlackBerry World and when that things goes off there is no chance of not hearing it!

Introducing the first sensor-free sleep cycle alarm clock

Hannover, Germany – Stress begins in the Morning. Conventional alarm clocks harm our health. A new study shows that even the wake-up call of a conventional alarm clock puts our body under unhealthy stress. The concentration of the stress hormone “Cortisol” is more than double compared to when we wake up by ourself. So, using this sleep cycle alarm clock could be a good idea.

Scientific study results: The concentration of the stress hormone Cortisol was tested under various waking conditions: waking both on workdays and on a free day with a conventional alarm clock and waking spontaneously. The results showed that the Cortisol levels in the first 30 minutes after waking with a conventional alarm clock had risen by an average of 100% – regardless of whether it was a workday or a free day. When the probands woke spontaneously, however, the concentration of Cortisol rose only 39%. This means, conventional alarm clocks induce allmost three times more unhealthy stress in the morning. To provide good and healthy sleep, we should keep cortisol levels healthy and under control.

In recent years, research has shown that how we deal with everyday stress can affect our waistline in particular. This can be a huge threat to our health because abdominal fat is more dangerous – and increases disease risk more – than fat located in any other part of the body. Excessive abdominal fat is linked directly to serious health conditions like hypertension and diabetes.

Women in particular have been found to accumulate more fat around their waists while they’re under stress. In fact, a Yale University study showed that even otherwise – slim persons who are under high stress levels are prone to put on weight on around their abdominal area. When we are stressed out, our bodies release a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol has been proven to encourage fat storage in the abdominal area. The worst part is if we don’t alleviate stress, cortisol levels stay high even when the origin al source of stress has subsided. The prolonged effects of cortisol will cause even more fatty deposits to find their way to your middle even when the stress seems to have passed. Obese persons have significantly higher urinary free cortisol excretion than normal-weight persons.

Higher and more prolonged levels of cortisol in the bloodstream have been shown to have negative effects, such as: weight gain, depression, pain, suppressed thyroid function, blood sugar imbalances, decreased bone density, skeletal muscle wasting, high blood pressure, lowered immunity, impaired erectile function, menstrual abnormalities, fatigue, chronic pain, headache, migraine, fibromyalgia, muscle pain, poor digestion, oily skin, acne and eczema. Elevated cortisol also leads to wrinkles, sagging, and impaired wound healing. Elevated cortisol in pregnant mothers influences cortisol metabolism during the baby’s crucial development periods. Cortisol is what makes us fat, so installing and using this app could be a good idea.

The good news is, despite the fact that stress is an unavoidable part of life, there is something we can do about it. Using a sleep cycle alarm clock could be a way. The new Weight Loss Alarm Clock for iOS and Android is the best, it requires no sensors. To keep cortisol levels healthy and under control, a clinical neuroscientist developed and patented an innovative sleep cycle alarm clock. “Weight Loss Alarm Clock” for iOs and Android wakes us at a moment when we are nalready almost awake. It does not need any sensors, no motion sensors, no acoustic sensors like other sleep cycle alarm clocks. It wakes us definitely in your light sleep phase. Then our brain is already active and in a state similar to when you wake up by ourself.

Compared to conventional alarm clocks, the new “Weight Loss Alarm Clock” gives an individual wake up, which adapts itself to the users’ particular needs within a few nights. This patented alarm clock leads to a gentle and stress free wake up. Sudden, abrupt waking in the morning as with loud, conventional alarm clocks and the associated release of stress hormones from the adrenal gland will be avoided by using this novel and intelligent self adapting, personal sleep cycle alarm clock. Cortisol is what makes us fat, so installing and using this app could be a good idea.

Health benefits are cortisol decrease, weight loss, stress reduction, increase of skeletal muscle mass, pain reduction, enhanced male virility, enhanced erectile function, improvement of cognitive performance, improvement of fatigue, chronic fatigue and better general health and physical fitness. “Weight Loss Alarm Clock” is very easy to use. In order to be woken up smoothly, sleepers will be guided from the deep sleep phase or dream phase into the light sleep phase by gentle sounds.

Unlike the hitherto existing sleep cycle alarm clocks “Weight Loss Alarm Clock” does not require any additional implement such as wristband motion sensors, sound sensors or movement sensors. Users simply set their desired wake up time. After waking up, they merely slide a finger across the screen to stop the alarm. Everything else is taken care of by the patented and intelligent system.

Device Requirements for iOs:
* iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
* Requires iOS 3.1.3 or later

Get your geek on with Binary Clock X

If you’re a bit geeky, like myself, you may want to check out Binary Clock X in BlackBerry World. There are a few binary clock apps to be found but I quite like the way that Binary Clock X looks. One thing about it though is that it also includes an actual digital clock which is a bit of a let down but I guess it caters to all by doing this.

The app has an explanation of how to read the binary clock, again showing signs of catering to all users rather than hardcore geeks. You also have the option to set an alarm through the app though I haven’t made use of this myself. If you like variety, then you can also change the colour of the LED of the binary clock.

What I would like to see is the ability to turn off the fact that it shows the time in digital form too. There are other app that show just the binary clock but I prefer the way this one looks visually. Binary Clock X is available from BlackBerry World and it is free. If it appeals to you go check it out now.

Rise Alarm Clock for iPhone and iPad review

ec216b75fbe hero.jpg Rise Alarm Clock for iPhone and iPad review

It’s sleep and relaxation week here at iMore for Mobile Nations for fitness month, so we’re going to take a look at an app that’s related to both these topics: Rise Alarm Clock for iPhone and iPad.

Rise Alarm Clock for iPhone and iPad is a very elegantly designed alarm clock with a gesture-based interface and relaxing use of color. It’s extremely easy, and even a little fun, to use.

To set an alarm, you simply hold your finger on the screen and swipe up and down until you reach the desired time (within 15 minutes). As you swipe along the screen, the background will change colors to reflect the time of day. To fine-tune the time, tap above or below the displayed time to move it by 5-minute increments. Once you’ve picked the correct time, just swipe left or right to set the alarm.

When the alarm is set the screen will go dark and the text will change to the color that the previous screen was for that time. A timer will also appear under the time that displays the amount of time until the alarm goes off. This makes Rise a great motivator to go to bed early so that you don’t see a depressing “5 hours until rise” when you’re heading to bed.

From this screen, you can also add or subtract time in 5-minute increments, create or select a playlist of music to fall asleep to, adjust the volume, and enable the repeating alarm.

After about 15 seconds of not doing anything on this screen, Rise switches to Clock Mode which displays the current time in the center and the amount of time left until the alarm goes off at the bottom. Taping the screen will take you out of Clock mode.

When the alarm goes off, the sound gently fades in so that it doesn’t startle you awake. The displayed time also bounces on the screen and you are given the option to turn off the alarm by swiping left or right, or you can hit the snooze for more sleep. If you opt for the snooze, you can make it longer than 5 minutes by simply tapping the plus sign.

Although this is not a fault of the app, but rather the limitations that Apple has on the iOS 6 SDK, it’s important to note that in order for Rise Alarm Clock to be fully functional, you must have it running in the foreground before locking the screen. If you exit the app by pressing the home screen, you will receive a notification at the time you set the alarm for, instead. The good news is that the notification will play the sound that you selected and Rise will continue to send you notifications until you clear it out. When you “slide to snooze”, Rise will open and the 5 minute snooze will activate. If you’d rather turn off the alarm, just swipe left or right.

The good

  • Gesture-based
  • Beautiful and relaxing colors
  • Great selection of calming sounds, or use your own music
  • Sound fades in when alarm goes off
  • Snooze option
  • Ability to snooze or turn off the alarm from the lock screen with a shake (iPhone only)
  • Fall asleep to music
  • Set as repeating alarm
  • Universal for iPhone and iPad

The bad

  • Only one repeating alarm can be set at a time

The bottom line

Rise Alarm Clock is an excellent alternative to the alarm clock available in Apple’s built-in Clock app. It features a gorgeous gesture-based interface that is easy to use. Rise also includes a great selection of calming sounds to wake up to so that you can begin your day in a great mood.
