Project Tango will power NASA’s SPHERES robotic platform, will launch into space later this summer

While Project Ara is more immediately aimed at providing a commercial solution for improving the lives of smartphone users around the globe, the equally ambitious Project Tango is currently geared towards developers and organizations looking to find unique ways to make use a device that is essentially aware of its own surroundings.

Project Tango utilizes a pair of cameras and an infrared projector to measure depth and observe movement, and then takes this information and creates a 3D map of the space around it. Aside from this, the specs inside the Tango ‘phone’ aren’t much different from your typical handset, such as its quad-core SoC and 2GB of RAM.

Google and NASA are working to integrate Tango with NASA’s own robotic platform, SPHERES.

Project Tango has a lot of potential, and Google has already been releasing the device into the hands of various partners over the last couple months. One of these partners is NASA, and today Google revealed a bit about what NASA intends to do with Project Tango.

Project Tango and it role in SPHERES

Since the summer of 2013, Google ATAP’s Tango team has been working closely with a NASA team at the Ames Research Center. The focus of their relationship has been on working to integrate Tango with NASA’s own robotic platform, called SPHERES.

The goal of the SPHERES platform is basically to create autonomous robotic assistants that can eventually handle the more menial tasks for those aboard the ISS space station. Where does Tango play into all this? Basically the smartphone plugs into the SPHERES robotic prototype, providing it with the “eyes” needed to properly navigate around the space station.

When might SPHERES and Tango actually make their way beyond testing and into space? Sooner then you’d think. If all goes well, Project Tango and SPHERES should be launched into orbit later this summer. This is certainly a unique use of the technology behind Project Tango and makes it clear that Tango’s long-term effects could go way beyond simply giving us a cool 3D sensing handset to play around with.

Intel’s Dual-OS platform in trouble, Asus Transformer Duet reportedly canceled

asus-transformer-duet

At CES earlier this year Intel officially took the wraps off its Dual-OS platform, promoting the idea of Android and Windows running side-by-side in convertible laptops and tablet PCs. At the time, Asus even showed off its plans for a 4-in-1 hybrid device that could act as a Windows laptop, Windows tablet, Android laptop or an Android tablet.

As it turns out, neither Microsoft or Google is too keen on the idea, and Microsoft has reportedly adopted a new policy of not supporting dual-OS devices. A new report from the Wall Street Journal says Google is also interested in an “all-Android approach”. Of course, companies don’t necessarily need to have Google’s support to use Android, but they do need Google Play certification if they really want to make the most out of the experience.

So what does all of this mean for Asus? The WSJ claims that Asus has now canceled the Transformer Book Duet altogether. Asus is also said to be getting ready to shelf its two existing AIO PCs that run dual-OS technology. It’s unclear whether or not Intel will follow suit and scrapping the Dual-OS idea, or if the company will attempt to reach an agreement with Microsoft and Google to keep the concept alive.

What do you think, are you bummed to see the Dual-OS concept shot down so early? Or do you feel that the Dual-OS concept would have caused more confusion and issues than it was worth?

Will you continue to use Google Talk once BBM is cross platform?

We’ve now known that BBM will be available for Android and iOS users for some time. One thing that was playing on my mind is that when our Android and iPhone friends do have access to BBM will I still bother to have the Google Talk app open on my BlackBerry.

Analyst bullish on BlackBerry because of cross platform BBM

Analyst bullish on BlackBerry because of cross platform BBM

Earlier this week independent analyst Ed Zabitsky of ACI Research launched coverage of BlackBerry.  He has a strong buy rating on the stock and a target price.

It’s worth pointing out that Zabitsky is not your typical analyst.  Not only because he runs his own firm and doesn’t do any trading or investment banking for clients. But also because he picks stocks almost exclusively based on technology product transitions. This means he doesn’t do so-called “channel checks” or anything remotely close to this. Instead, he works way harder than anyone I know to deeply understand the moving parts in the tech industries that he covers. Usually this means he can talk to you for hours about topics that Wall Street analysts don’t understand at all.

Pooter Heading to BlackBerry Jam? Show some platform love with these developer wallpapers!

This year, BlackBerry Live and BlackBerry Jam are being held together in Orlando, Florida starting on May 14th and running until May 16th. To help celebrate the activities, Pootermobile has whipped up some awesome wallpapers. They’ve been put together for everyone but ultimately; they’re a shout out to all the great developers out there who are working hard on making great apps for the BlackBerry platform. As Pooter put it:

At The World Of Pootermobile the aim is to bring joy to your devices’ screens in many ways. I will be forever grateful to the people that have supported the site. But there are others that grace our BlackBerry screens with awesomeness that may be overlooked sometimes. The BlackBerry developer! I will always be a fan of a developer and their coding skills. As we have seen in the last few months developers have been hard at work making sure we have some exciting apps on our BlackBerry 10 devices. In order to show my gratitude for developer’s work, and wishing them success, I have made some slick walls not only for them but for everyone!

Whether you’re a developer looking to show off some platform love or just like some nice wallpapers, you can head on over to Pootermobiles website to grab the files. comScore: Android remains top smartphone platform with 51.7%

The latest comScore report has recently been published and once again we are seeing a similar story with Samsung and Android as well as Apple and iOS taking the majority of the shares. This report in particular is dealing with the smartphone subscriber market share — taking a look at the tops in terms of device manufacturer and also the platform.

ff62bcf376012411.jpg comScore: Android remains top smartphone platform with 51.7%

Looking first by manufacturer and we have Apple sitting in the top spot with 38.9 percent. Apple saw some growth as compared from the previous (November 2012) report which had them at 35 percent. While Samsung is in second here, they are a decent ways down from Apple. Samsung has 21.3 percent, which while lower, did show some growth. The previous Samsung numbers had them sitting at 20.3 percent.

Rounding out the top five here and we have HTC, Motorola and LG with 9.3, 8.4 and 6.8 percent respectively. Coincidentally, the increase of Apple and Samsung came as a result of HTC, Motorola and LG losing ground. HTC had the biggest drop of the three with a decrease of 1.7 percent. Motorola had a 1.1 percent drop and LG had an ever so slight drop of 0.2 percent.

Shifting over to the platforms here and we have Android with the majority at 51.7 percent. Apple and iOS are sitting in second with 38.9 percent. While the drop from Android to iOS is pretty significant, moving into third and we are seeing percentages in the single digits. BlackBerry, Microsoft and Symbian round out places three through five and they are sitting with 5.4, 3.2 and 0.5 percent respectively. Interestingly enough, while Android remained in the top slot, they actually dropped 2.0 percent from the previous (November 2012) report. Apple on the other hand saw an increase of 3.9 percent as compared to the previous report.
