Samsung Galaxy S III 4.2.2 update leaks with GALAXY S 4 features
0
We saw T-Mobile begin rolling out a Galaxy S III update last week. That update was bringing the handset to Android 4.1.2 with new features to include multi-window, however it looks like that will not be the most recent Galaxy S III update for very long. A Galaxy S III update that is said to still be in the testing phase has recently leaked. This one is Android 4.2.2 with a build ID of JDQ39.

For now we haven’t heard anything from the carriers and instead this leak has reportedly come direct from Samsung. Assuming the testing phase goes will, this update is expected to come available in June. Of course, that will be initially available for unlocked handsets and carrier specific models will likely be waiting quite a bit longer. Putting the potential wait aside, lets discuss the features which look to include more than a few from the GALAXY S 4.
Android 4.2.2 build JDQ39 for the Galaxy S III should be getting goodies to include new screen modes, voice controls and an updated S-Voice. These are all GALAXY S 4 features with the new screen modes being Adapt Display and Professional Photo. The other GALAXY S 4 feature, the enhanced voice controls will allow the user to control their phone with their voice.
Galaxy S III users will also be getting the lockscreen from the GALAXY S 4. This will include support for multiple widgets, the Ripple and Light unlock effects and the ability to set a personal message as well as change the clock size. Aside from the GALAXY S 4 specific items, this update also adds a few other Jelly Bean goodies. The changelog points towards items to include Daydream as well as a new driving mode, actionable alerts, new additions in the Notification Center, the ability to run Samsung apps in full-screen and a new Smart Switch widget.
The gallery will also see some changes. In this case it looks like users will have the option to choose a white background. Finally, the remaining item here is an updated Settings app. This one will bring a tabbed interface to the settings and should be familiar for those who have used a GALAXY S 4. All said and done, it looks like Samsung has a decent update for the Galaxy S III in the works, not lets just hope the carriers will approve and release it without much in terms of a wait.

Hangouts quietly gets a new update to fix tablet woes
0
Google this week at Google I/O unveiled its unified messaging service called Hangouts (our app review here). The Google Talk replacement has had a rocky launch, causing update woes for many, especially those with a tablet. Rest assured that Google has quietly pushed out a new update for Hangouts, which will make the app compatible with tablets of varying sizes.
Keep in mind that users may still be experiencing compatibility issues, as the service is being pushed out over several days. So it shouldn’t be long before users running Android 2.3 or higher see Google Talk get replaced with the Hangouts interface.
The excitement for Hangouts has dwindled a little bit as users learned that, unlike iMessages, it does not have SMS support yet. The sort-o good news is that Google Hangouts Community Manager Dori Storbeck confirmed that SMS support was coming, but quickly rescinded her comment saying, “we actually have nothing to announce at this time.” However, there’s still hope for SMS integration, as the app still requests a number of SMS permissions.
Have you downloaded the new update for Hangouts? Has it fixed the tablet woes that were previously an issue? Better yet, have you gotten to use the new messaging service?

Google+ Hangouts app update adds tablet support
0
Google released the Hangouts app shortly after the I/O keynote on May 15th and while the device support was listed as being for Android 2.3 or later, there were some limitations to that. One of which was in regards to tablets. Google had put a note in the Play Store description saying that said tablet support would be available soon and it looks like that update has since arrived in the Google Play Store.

The what’s new section in the Play Store listing still reflects the earlier update, however we can confirm the Hangouts app now works on tablets. Specifically, we have tested the app on a Nexus 7. Otherwise, as we saw with the initial smartphone release, the Hangouts app is replacing the previously existing Talk app. Simply put, if you are rocking an Android tablet and want to get in on the fun of Hangouts, proceed to update.
Aside from the quietly added support for tablets, Hangouts users also have SMS integration to look forward to. There hasn’t been any date or timeframe as to when that will arrive, however the confirmation did come by way of a Google employee. Dori Storbeck, Community Manager for Hangouts and Chat has said the SMS integration will be “coming soon.”
In addition to the confirmation, there is also a bit of SMS integration evidence sitting in the Google Accounts settings page. Perhaps a bit more fun, Google seems to have also included some Easter Eggs. These however, are available for those using the desktop. The list of Easter Eggs includes everything from ponies to pitchforks.

There is also the KONAMO cheat available. That one will likely be a favorite by many and as a refresher, you will need to hit the arrow keys for up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, and then B A Enter. Anyway, while you are waiting for your tablet to finish updating the Hangouts app, check the above image for the full list of Easter Eggs and have some fun with friends.

Pebble SDK update adds two-way communication app support
0
Those using the Pebble smartwatch with RunKeeper received a decent update last week. As of today however, it looks like the folks at Pebble have some additional SDK related news. The announcement is for the PebbleKit, which is being described as the “next stage of the platform.” Basically, this release will allow for two-way communication between your smartphone and the Pebble.

The average user will not see anything immediately, however this will allow developers to create apps that communicate back and forth. Some examples include news and weather apps, an emergency beacon activator, Facebook and Foursquare app check-ins and even remote controls for other internet connected devices.
The other side of this announcement deals with the Pebble Sports API. This is what we are already seeing with RunKeeper and FreeCaddie, however the public release of this API means we could see similar functionality coming to other sports related apps in the future. Looking back to the RunKeeper support, it was said that more than 13,000 Pebble users have connected.

This all of course, ties in with the release of the SDK from back in April. That SDK allowed third party developers to create watchfaces and games. The folks at Pebble have said 8,000 developers have downloaded the SDK since April and that more than 5,000 watch apps have been created. Furthermore, those 5,000 watch apps have lead to 300,000 installs.
All said and done, while this is not going to change anything today, it does give some hope that Pebble will further improve over time. We look forward to seeing additional app support and to see which apps will enable the two-way communication. And as a follow-up, I can say that weeks later, I am still happily wearing my Pebble.

Hangouts/Babel doesn’t include SMS support (yet?), Android 4.3 also mentioned in rumor update
0
A report detailing Google’s rumored Babel messaging app that would be launched in the near future has been updated to include more information about the service, but also about other Google products, Android 4.3-included.
The same The Verge forum poster that revealed yesterday that Babel will in fact be called Hangout, revealing some of its features, has updated that post with more information.
After previously revealing that the app would offer a unified messaging solution to Android users, feature an app icon “similar to the messenger icon” and offer a Holo UI, the tipster returned with more information.
According to him, Babel will be called Hangouts (as in plural; as in Google+ Hangouts) not Hangout as previously reported. Not that the final name of the app will be that important, will it?
What’s more interesting is that Hangouts apparently lacks SMS/MMS sync, or at least the feature is “not there on the app that’s being dogfooded.” Moreover, the same Ryan Socio suggested that the final version may lack SMS support at first, when answering to a comment on his updated news:
The fact that it’s about 10 days away from launch doesn’t make the situation feel anymore promising.
Socio also added that Google Now would get “location-based reminders” and Gmail’s would be “Holofied” in a “UI overhaul.”
In addition to dishing out all these details on future products, Socio briefly mentioned Android 4.3 in his updated post, basically confirming this particular Android version that has been already spotted in server logs, and may be already the object of meetings between certain companies involved with Android:
I may not be able to get much info about 4.3, my sources are not taking part in the internal beta program.
While he isn’t apparently in the loop with Android 4.3 news, hardware information may be available next week. In the past, he apparently provided accurate information about Google’s latest hardware announcements (LG Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10) so he could very well be right about Google’s plans for Google I/O 2013.
That said, we’ll remind you that we don’t have anything official from Google at this time on either Hangouts/Hangout/Babel, Google Now, Gmail or Android 4.3, so we’ll have to take everything with a grain of salt until things become clearer. Google I/O is just 10 days away, an event that we’ll thoroughly cover for you.

Jelly Bean update in final stages of testing for several Xperia handsets, Sony promises more details next week
0
Have a Sony smartphone from last year and still patiently awaiting the upgrade to Jelly Bean? Sony took to Twitter today to reveal that several of their Xperia handsets should be seeing Android 4.1 very soon, as work on the updates have now reached the final stage.
Specifically, Sony mentioned the Xperia P, Xperia Go, Xperia S, Xperia SL, Xperia Arco S and Xperia Ion. Unfortunately no word on exactly when the updates will arrive, though Sony does say they will have more details next week.

There is a lot to love about Jelly Bean, and this is certainly a welcome upgrade. If you own one of the above handsets you will soon enter a world of improved notifications, Google Now, camera improvements and of course better overall speed thanks to Project Butter enhancements.
While it’s a bit frustrating to wait for Jelly Bean on devices like the Xperia Ion – which has been out since last summer – we have to admit that Sony has done a lot to improve its image in the Android world as of late. They’ve certainly opened things of for developers as of late. Some examples of this change in attitude include their involvement with AOSP code and reports that they have even given sites like XDA free devices to help with projects.
Hopefully we will have some solid information about Sony’s Jelly Bean update plans to report next week.
