Toshiba TransferJet wireless transfer USB sticks now out in the wild

[#protected_0#]

With a good week or two left before the rumored end of year production schedule, [#protected_0#] has announced the availability of its TransferJet product. This pair of USB and micro-USB sticks is supposed to be Toshiba’s answer to the problem of quick and easy transfer of files between a mobile device and a computer, but it has its own quirks that might make it even less feasible.

It’s been almost a whole year since Toshiba first unveiled this wireless transfer technology at CES 2013 in the beginning of the year. It appeared in a more refined version in early October at CEATEC in Japan. In concept, it utilizes wireless technology to quickly and conveniently transfer files between a computer with a regular USB port and a mobile device, particularly an Android one, with a micro-USB port without fumbling around with cables. Unfortunately, there are a few caveats to the the whole thing that makes this solution less than perfect.

For one, the device compatibility is a bit limited. On the computer side, it requires Windows 7 or 8, which will leave Mac and Linux users out in the cold. On the mobile side, it only works with Android, and not all Android devices but only those running Android 4.0 or higher. But more importantly, the “wireless” aspect of the sticks isn’t all that Toshiba makes it out to be. Unlike Bluetooth, it requires a much closer proximity between the two sticks, almost within NFC distances. On the other hand, unlike NFC or other wireless transfer alternatives, it does allow transfers or large data at faster rates.

The Toshiba TransferJet sticks are available in Japan for around . At the moment, there is no word on when it will be made available in international markets.

LG G Flex flexible display smartphone spotted in the wild (hands-on video)

LG G Flex Press Render 3

While LG’s first flexible display smartphone – dubbed as the LG G Flex – is not official yet, it somehow managed to appear in the news in Argentina.

As you can see in the image gallery and video below, the G Flex looks pretty much like the handset we saw a few days ago in a few leaked press renders (see image above).

According to Telefe, the device has a 6-inch display, has its buttons placed on the back, G2 style, and is meant to be used to consume content in landscape mode. That explains why its curvature is similar to some LG and Samsung OLED TV models.

Furthermore, the G Flex will supposedly launch next month in South Korea, “with no release planned for the U.S., Europe or Latin America.”

Interestingly, when The Verge contacted LG for further comment, the company was not sure whether the phone shown on Argentinian TV was indeed the “real thing,” or not.

In addition to the LG G Flex, there’s one other smartphone with a curved display ready to hit at least one market, the Samsung Galaxy Round, which will also be available in limited numbers.

[Update:] In case the video above does not load, check it out directly at Telefe.

Verizon HTC One Max apparently photographed in the wild

HTC Logo

While still not official, the Verizon HTC One Max has apparently been photographed in the wild, next to an iPhone 5 in what seem to be the clearest images showing the rumored handset (see gallery below).

According to an Android Central forum user, the images come from a Verizon retail store employee in New Jersey, who had access to the device.

As you can see, the HTC One Max is gigantic, especially when compared to a 4-inch device. Furthermore, these are high-quality images which clearly show the Verizon logo on the device “where HTC’s [logo] is supposed to go.”

Not many details about the HTC One Max have been shared with these images, although the same Verizon rep apparently said that there’s a fingerprint scanner on the back of the handset, and that the back cover is removable.

The HTC One Max is expected to be officially announced and launched at some point in the following weeks. The device will be a direct competitor to the Sony Xperia Ultra Z and the recently launched Galaxy Note 3.

Are you looking forward to the HTC One Max, or are you going to purchase a different extra-large handset this year?

Nexus 5 reportedly photographed in the wild

Nexus 5 leak

A new purported image of the Nexus 5 has hit the web – this time the handset has been photographed in the wild by a user.

A MacRumors forum user has posted more details about his experience with the Nexus 5 alongside an image of the device. Here’s how he described the whole thing:

Got to handle the Nexus 5. It is smaller than the G2. Didn’t actually measure it, but holding it in the hand it is smaller. It does feel good holding it. The black back cover feels like my Nexus 7. The screen was ok, didn’t wow me like the Note 3. The bezel is very small.

When asked to share more details about the device, he basically said he wasn’t able to do so, but he did post the image above:

I wish i could. Google is sneaky and has ways to see where the leaks come from. They are funny too. When the phone started up it needs to be updated. Some experimental software stuff and it says you need to guard it like a ninja.

Nexus 5 at Android 4.4 KitKat statue unveiling

We have no way of knowing at this time whether the picture is genuine or not, but the device it shows seems to be similar to the Nexus handset seen in that KitKat promo video posted by Google (see second image above) and to that Nexus 5 handset that was reportedly photographed in a bar (third image) – check out the camera and Nexus logo in all three images.

If real, this Nexus 5 leak is the clearest yet, although it’s yet to be confirmed. And yes, it appears there are two Nexus devices in the top image, one on top of the other.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini spotted in the wild

galaxy-s4-mini-2

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini has appeared online via a Twitter account of someone named Ermek Kubanychbekov. He has posted multiple photos online of the Galaxy S4 Mini in addition to comparison photos against the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy S4.

The SamMobile says that the device has a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD with a pixel density of 256ppi in addition to a 1.6GHz dual-core processor. Moreover, the device is based on Samsung’s TouchWiz Nature UX 2.0 running the latest version of Android, 4.2.2.

Nothing has been confirmed by Samsung, of course, but contrary to earlier rumorsSamMobile says the device is expected to launch during the summer in June or July. If that is the case and is not just a rumor, it shouldn’t be long before Samsung makes an official announcement.

The Galaxy S4 Mini, as expected, looks a lot like its big brother, the Galaxy S4. Hopefully we’ll get official confirmation from Samsung soon.

White Nexus 4 bumper spotted in the wild

white-n4-bumper2-680

It appears that Google is slowly releasing accessories for their flagship Nexus 4. As you know, Google is currently offering a wireless charging orb and a black bumper for the device. Google initially released the black bumper last year while the charging orb was released last month. Up until today, there was no physical proof that any other official accessories existed. However, a white Nexus 4 bumper has actually been spotted in a Canadian store, sitting along side the device itself.

The bumper was spotted in a Videotron store in Montreal, Canada. Everything appears to be official as the packaging is identical to the traditional black one. It is selling for the exact same price of .99 so everything seems legitimate. It has not yet appeared on the Google Play Store and we are unsure if it ever will. It does arrive for those in Canada at a convenient time due to the fact that the black bumper is sold out on the Google Play Store again.

Unfortunately, Google has a bad history of letting products slip out into retail stores without stocking them in their own online store first. Hopefully we won’t see these bumpers being sold for an inflated price like we saw with Google Nexus 7 docking stations.
